Connotations of Form and Color

COLOR

When designing, every choice you make should support the intention of your design.  From color, to arrangement, to text, to form, every decision should be thought through and explicable (you should be able to explain it).

One of the strongest conveyors of meaning is color and it is employed in every facet of our lives both to influence us to feel a certain way (advertising) and for us to convey a specific demeanor (fashion & anti-fashion).

The traditional (In the U.S.) meanings ascribed to colors are below:

  • Red: Passion, Love, Anger
  • Orange: Energy, Happiness, Vitality
  • Yellow: Happiness, Hope, Deceit
  • Green: New Beginnings, Abundance, Nature
  • Blue: Calm, Responsible, Sadness
  • Purple: Creativity, Royalty, Wealth
  • Black: Mystery, Elegance, Evil
  • Gray: Moody, Conservative, Formality
  • White: Purity, Cleanliness, Virtue
  • Brown: Nature, Wholesomeness, Dependability
  • Tan or Beige: Conservative, Piety, Dull
  • Cream or Ivory: Calm, Elegant, Purity

FORM

Form falls just behind color when conveying meaning within a design. Forms fall under three categories; Geometric--squares, circles, ellipses, polyhedrons, etc (often symmetrical); Organic--the forms found in nature (often asymmetrical); Abstract--simplified everyday forms.
